Did you know that there are lots of wildlife surveys going on all of the time and that you can get involved in quite a lot of them? By checking what wildlife there is in different areas we can find out what there is, which animals or plants are doing well or badly, and what conservation might need to be done. By helping with these surveys you can help people to do better work to protect things that need the most help. Also, it is really fun to go outdoors and explore what is there. We have been surprised at how much wildlife we have found even in our back garden. All of the surveys give you lots of information about what to look for and how to identify different things.
Here are some links to different surveys you can get involved with:
BIG Hedgehog Map if you see a hedgehog (alive or dead) then let them know so they can track how many there are in different areas. You can see on a map where hedgehogs have been seen in your area.
Big Garden Birdwatch | The RSPB Big garden bird watch. This is really good because you get sent a sheet to help identify different birds and then you can find the results for the whole country or your area to see what birds are doing well or badly.
Living with Mammals survey - People's Trust for Endangered Species (ptes.org) spotting mammals of different types either in your garden or out in the wild anywhere in the UK.
Stag beetle survey- take part in the national 'Great Stag Hunt' looking for stag beetles which are very endangered and have gone extinct in some parts of the UK.
The Great British Hedgerow Survey If you are going on a walk where there are hedges, you could take part in this survey to find out what plants and animals there are in the hedges.
OPAL Surveys | STEM Bugs, climate, water, air and biodiversity surveys with helpful sheets and forms to fill in then links to send the results to.
